Gaming plays a key role in our lives, and is a colossal industry. We all love playing phenomenal titles with deep storylines and challenging gameplay. Sometimes, though, it’s important to remember that the main aim is simply to relax.

Modern life is hectic and stressful, but choosing the right games will help you to relax. Here are six of the best game types to help you achieve that goal of restoring peace in an entertaining way.

Light Brainteasers

When looking for a game to de-stress, you probably want a title where you can just pick-up-and-play. Brainteasers are a great example where you will either already know the rules or can learn them in seconds.  If avoiding stress is the goal, though, you should steer clear of overly taxing brainteasers. In truth, you want a title that engages the brain but feels relaxed.

Several brainteasers fall into this category but an online word search is arguably the best. It’s simple, is a solo player game played at your pace, and helps you shut off from outside stressors. It also brings added benefits, such as exercising the eyes and visual analytical skills. Better still, this is an activity you can enjoy from any device even if you only have a few minutes.

Other light brainteasers like sudoku and memory-based games are great options too. Aside from a relaxed gaming experience, they support cognitive health and can be enjoyed by players of all ages.

VR Experiences

When life is stressing you out, gaming is a way to step into a new world where those issues no longer play on your mind. Traditional video games like RPGs and FPS titles will achieve this aim. However, putting on a VR headset takes you away from the surroundings of your home and digitally transports you to an immersive new land. You will forget about your stress.

While VR has changed the landscape in several ways, you must take care regarding title choices. The jump scares from a horror game, for example, could spike your stress levels. It is probably better to choose a relaxed VR experience, such as a simulator or mystery game that does not contain gore or time limits. Or you could enter a VR cinema, for example.

The most important step is to take precautions by moving any hazards out of the way. Otherwise, you may be left facing the stress of hurting yourself or breaking an item within the home setting.

Fitness Games

Once upon a time, gaming was seen as a sedentary activity. However, there are plenty of fitness-based titles on the market in 2026. While they do cause a small spike in physical stress, this actually has a positive impact. And from a mental health perspective, the release of endorphins gives you the same benefits as a workout in the gym or on the streets.

A lot of people find it less stressful to exercise in the comfort of their homes. There are fitness-based VR games available. Alternatively, there are motion-detecting fitness games on several consoles. Alternatively, you could look at Zwift bikes. This adds a layer of gamification, as well as competitiveness, to the workout experience. You will feel less stressed by the end.

While not technically games, you could also follow story-based yoga sessions on YouTube or other video platforms. The fact that there is no winning or losing promotes the calming vibes further still.

Family-Friendly Multiplayer Titles

Nothing clears stress quite like having fun with your loved ones. While gaming was once viewed as a slightly lonely activity, multiplayer games have played a key role for decades. A little healthy competition and a lot of shared enjoyment makes it the perfect genre for all families. Not least because many of the games are designed for everyone from children to grandparents.

Nintendo has a great reputation for mastering games in this field. Mario Party, Mario Kart, and a host of other titles are available. Most of these games allow you to change the settings for individual players, such as automatic acceleration for young players. You could also look to kid-centric titles like Fun Fun Animal Park. It’s simple, fast-paced multiplayer fun.

The added benefit of child-friendly titles is that you’ll avoid the potential stress of them being unable to play. Likewise, the fact that you can pick-up-and-play gives them an advantage over other genres.

Online Multiplayers

As well as enjoying video games with your family, you could look to connect with friends online. Whether it’s a real-life friend or another play you met online doesn’t matter. The chance to shoot the breeze via your headset is one of the best ways to de-stress. After all, human interactions are the key to our happiness, even when we are not in the same room.

Online multiplayer titles cover many genres. Sports simulators, FPS titles, and racing games are some examples. Or you could look at a sandbox game like Minecraft. You can dip in and out as you like with optimal freedom. This also allows you to progress your game when your multiplayer buddy isn’t available. Using your creativity can feel therapeutic too.

The exact type of multiplayer game you choose will depend on the type of gamer you are. Either way, though, the digital presence of a friend creates a social element that’s sure to see stress evaporate ASAP.

Simulators

Your goal is to take yourself away from the stresses of modern life and enjoy something entirely different. As such, simulators could be the perfect option. They often offer a lot of the freedoms seen in sandbox titles, but without the mass-multiplayer aspect. Many of them get you to try different jobs, without the stress, or play god by building a universe.

Flight simulators, truck simulators, and farming simulators have all seen success in recent times. Especially for players looking to de-stress. Of course, The Sims is a massive franchise too. Creating digital versions of your loved ones, or enemies, allows you to build their lives. Let’s be honest, treating your enemies badly is just as relaxing as seeing virtual loved ones thrive.

Simulators often require you to play the game over multiple sessions, but this can be done at your pace. At a time when sports games and FPS titles heavily focus on microtransactions, this is a nice change.
