What started out as a research project by two students at Stanford University in California in 1996 became a search engine we all use today – Google. Larry Page and Sergey Brin initially called the project “BackRub” but later changed the name to Google, which is a result of misspelling of the word “googol” (the number one followed by one hundred zeros). The company was officially founded in 1998 and has been growing ever since. Today, this is the biggest company doing business in web search industry. Google has more than 50,000 employees and is assumed to be worth around 365 billion dollars. This company has relied on quite a few logos since its renaming from BackRub, having made the last change just a couple of days ago.
2015 Logo
On September 1, 2015 Google released its brand new logo which differs from the previous one couple of things. This was the biggest change made to the Google logo since 1999. The company decided to go with a more informal, sans-serif logo. Google announced that the new logo will work better between different screen sizes. This will benefit anyone who uses tablets or smartphones when browsing the web. It will also be easier to display the new logo on low-bandwidth connections. This has been done because Google wants to bring internet to rural and underserved areas. The famous “G” icon is also gone, and it has been replaced by less formal, four-colored “G”. All of this will mark a new era at the company that has recently announced plans for a new parent company called Alphabet. Still, we shouldn’t forget about the older versions of Google logo.
1997-1999 Logos
Ever since the company has been renamed into Google there was a Google logo. Still, the first design doesn’t look much like 2015 version. The color scheme was much different as well as the font. Once the company was officially founded another change to the Google logo was made. It was Sergey Brin himself who designed the new logo in 1998. It was very close to what we have today. Still, the color pattern was different as the initial “G” was green. Just a month later there were new adjustments to the Google logo. The color of the initial “G” was changed from green to blue and an exclamation mark was added to the name. Shadows beneath the letters were added and the color scheme that is still used today was introduced.
1999-2015 Logos
As we mentioned above, the same color scheme (with the blue “G”) was used when a new logo was introduced. Exclamation mark was removed from Google logo. The new logo was the basis for the other logos that were used between 2010 and 2015. New, 2010 version was soon introduced, where the projected shadow was removed and the different shade of yellow was used for the second “O”. The company than used almost the same logo in the period between 2013 and 2015. The only differences were flattened lettering and complete removal of the shadows.
The new logo has just been released but since we have witnessed so many changes in the design of the logo, we expect to see some more adjustments in the following years.
