Middle East nations have been looking for new ways to diversify their crude oil-reliant economies over the past few years.

One of the industries they have tapped into is gaming, and the region has quickly become a hub brewing with innovation and investment.

This point was recently evidenced by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) announcing a $40 million partnership with NIP Group.

Exciting Partnership Will Drive eSports Growth

The five-year agreement with ADIO will aid NIP as it bids to bolster its eSports operations, creative studios, game publishing, events and talent management.

NIP will provide ADIO with expertise to boost its gaming and eSports strategy. They will curate a thriving local ecosystem while extending their digital entertainment solutions worldwide.

The company was formed in 2023 when Swedish eSports powerhouse Ninjas in Pyjamas and Chinese digital sports entity ESV5 joined forces in a merger.

NIP boomed over the next two years, growing from a small company of around 60 employees to one boasting 400 workers. They also debuted on the Nasdaq stock exchange in July 2024.

The firm records annual revenues north of $100m and serves an audience base of around 600m people. Their rise over the past two years is a sign of the growth potential in the eSports industry.

NIP co-chief executive Hicham Chahine said: “For us, this (partnership with ADIO) is a significant catalyst, and how NIP takes the next step as a company and a business.

“Teaming up with one of the larger governments in the region obviously helps that because you get access to their networks, their resources, and by default, it enables the next growth journey.”

The UAE’s Vision for eSports and Digital Entertainment

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is eager to become a world-renowned centre for eSports as it strives to expand its economy and open new revenue streams.

The UAE is determined to become a leading international technology and entertainment destination, with Abu Dhabi proving to be the perfect location for this push.

The UAE's Vision for eSports and Digital Entertainment

Abu Dhabi hosts massive sporting events such as NBA games, UFC fights and a Formula One Grand Prix. The city has been earmarked to host several eSports tournaments as the region pushes into this new digital entertainment realm.

“Abu Dhabi is a very advanced economy,” Chahine added. “They are investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) technology and building infrastructure that fosters innovation. The eSports ecosystem is a natural extension of that.”

Saudi Arabia has also been a key player in the eSports boom in the Middle East. They hosted the first-ever eSports World Cup (ESW) in 2024.

The Kingdom will also host the first Olympics eSports Games, having secured a 12-year partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

These investments drive the momentum and set the pace for the entire industry while helping to legitimise eSports as a mainstream entertainment sector.

The Rise of eSports and its Ripple Effect on the Betting Sector

The growth of eSports in the Middle East has had a major impact on the digital economy, especially in the online betting sector.

Online betting helps to keep the audience engaged and connected to eSports. This relationship increases tournament revenue and drives traffic to other gaming verticals such as online casinos.

Many gaming fans have signed up for accounts at the best Arab casinos online to quench their thirst for a thrill. Games such as blackjack and roulette have proved to be hugely popular with Arab players.

Gaming operators are able to leverage this interest in betting to develop their customer database across the casino portion of their sites and the sportsbook element.

The worldwide eSports betting market will reportedly be worth over $23 billion by 2027, and the Middle East will contribute significantly this growth.

There is a young, tech-savvy populace equipped with high-speed internet and a government ready to back initiatives that support digital entertainment.

This dynamic has created the perfect environment for online betting firms to thrive. While many countries remain resistant to gambling, some are establishing formal regulatory frameworks.

These include the UAE, which has already started to issue licences to betting-related companies. Several other Middle East nations are closely monitoring the situation.
