New Zealand (NZ) has been making remarkable strides in 5G, registering record-breaking speeds and driving enhanced internet connectivity around the country.

Read on as we look at some of the latest developments that highlight the immense potential of 5G as a game-changer for many industries in New Zealand.

Breaking Records – 5G Uplink Speeds Sets the Pace

Ericsson, alongside Telstra and Qualcomm Technologies, recently broke the previous record after registering an uplink speed of 516 Mbps on a live commercial sub-6GHz 5G Standalone (5G SA) network.

The former record was 447 Mbps, and the companies are continuing to work towards expanding uplink capabilities to further bolster consumer and enterprise applications.

This is undoubtedly brilliant news for fans of online casino games. The tech leap means gameplay will be much smoother and payment transactions processed faster.

Players can also enjoy live dealer games without the usual frustration of buffering. All of the leading online casinos in NZ will be able to provide players with a better mobile experience via 5G.

The breakthrough came via Ericsson’s advanced RAN Processor 6672, Radio 4466 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System.

Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand Emilio Romeo believes this latest development shows how strong their latest network solutions are.

Telstra is rolling out the technologies, and users in numerous regions will enjoy unbelievable upload speed as New Zealand looks to become a main player in the 5G space.

Cradlepoint X20 5G Router Set to Empower Businesses

The new Ericsson Cradlepoint X20 5G Router will provide enterprise-class fixed wireless access (FWA) solutions to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), temporary sites and remote workers.

The plug-and-play router comes with high-speed connectivity. It can also slice networks while improving security online. This makes it the perfect choice for businesses looking for a flexible, affordable alternative to the typical wired structure.

There is a dual-SIM failover and an eight-hour battery back-up to keep connectivity going even in the worst conditions.

Retail stores, pop-up businesses and construction sites could use the X20 for rapid deployment. Remote workers will be able to enjoy high-speed internet that makes work and collaboration smoother.

The X20 router will be available for purchase from April 2025. NZ business owners have a new, powerful tool for their digital operations.

New Zealand’s Freight Industry Set for 5G Revolution

CentrePort Wellington plans to deploy a private 5G network alongside telecommunications giants Tu Atea. The 5G network will modernise port operations and improve freight management.

This wireless network is expected to support vehicle-mounted tablets, cranes and real-time logistics of up to four million tons of annual freight.

There will be high-power radio transceivers and antennas on light poles to ensure the connection is smooth and seamless, even when large vessels and containers block the signals.

Network slicing is also a major tenet in this deployment. This technique creates multiple virtual networks on top of a shared physical network to provide greater flexibility in the use and allocation of network resources. It will allow CentrePort to create virtual networks for specific operations.

CentrePort CEO Anthony Delaney believes the technology can surmount the usual communication problems at ports and help pave the way for coming smart network features.

Tu Atea is particularly enthused about being a part of this incredible milestone. They are committed to building specialised 5G solutions for New Zealand’s business infrastructure.

They will work alongside tech partner Mavenir to showcase how 5G networks can support industrial innovation while ensuring economic growth.
