The long wait is over. The successor of the S5 is entering the arena, featuring some new armor and fresh style too. With the fierce competition surrounding it, namely HTC one M9 and iPhone 6, there is little room for error. Do S6 and S6 Edge have what it takes to win us over as the next-gen prime smartphones? There are indeed many upgrades, but they come at a hefty price.
The new features and price
These smartphones are bestowed with many changes and brand new features, making them a different beast than S5. Samsung S6 and the spin-off S6 Edge version are available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities, and several different colors. Note that there is no MicroSD expansion, which was met with dismay by many.
For the base model, depending on the memory capacity, you will have to pay between $600 and $800. The S6 Edge is available for the staggering amount of at least $700, and the price goes up to $900. The two models have the same basic features, which makes the difference in price hard to swallow for some.
The looks matter
Samsung has introduced the premium metal design this time, and we don’t have to bother with cheap plastic. The S6 has a protruding rear 16-megapixel camera on non removable back panel and a metal framing. The dimensions of the two models differ; Edge is lighter, but thicker than the base model.
It also has a more innovative design, making it more unique than standard S6 that resembles an iPhone 6. It is the first smartphone with dual curved displays on the market. However, don’t spill your drinks celebrating yet because it’s not water resistant like the S5.
Samsung takes much pride in their screens. This sharp 5.1-inch QHD AMOLED display has a truckload more pixels than iPhone 6. With the 440 x 2560 resolution it provides an alluring window into the world of interconnectedness. Keep an eye also on some new unique features related to display.
Some next level power
Everything looks just fine on the surface, but what is underneath it? Bid farewell to Qualcomm processor, as both models are equipped with a 64-bit, octa-core Exynos 7420 processors. It is a new own-brand chip praised for its prowess and low power consumption. The processor is backed up by 3GB of DDR4 RAM. Phone’s software has been boosted with Android 5.0. Lollipop OS.
The phones feature a wireless charging of the 2,550mAh Lithium-Ion battery. With improved quick-charging, it reaches full power 150 percent faster than the S5’s one. So, twelve hours of web browsing is more likely to put you to sleep than your phone.
Back to the future
The S6 and S6 Edge are without a doubt Samsung’s next-generation flagship phones with more than appealing design. Although it feels like the premium phone, it is a matter of dispute whether it justifies the high price. There is neither removable battery nor upgradable MicroSD card, but you still get a slicker operating system, marvelous AMOLD screen, and a stunning camera. It is a top notch product greeting the future. And that future for smartphones is now.
